DIY Non Toxic Christmas Melts

There seems to be an influx of wax melts around this year, the most popular option being Scentsy who have a huge range of scents. I like the idea of using melts instead of burning essential oils directly in my diffuser or oil burner.

I’ve been trying to find out what’s actually in Scentsy wax melts, and so far I haven’t had much luck – the ingredients appear to be a secret. With options like candy cane buttercream and salted caramel toffee I’d be very wary of burning these in your home, they are not natural scents.

This recipe is the result of my playing around with different waxes and essential oils – all toxin-free and easy to work with at home. I found that the beeswax and coconut oil worked the best. The melts held together well, were easy to get out of the ice cube tray, and had a decent burn time, although they melted down quickly the liquid was long lasting.

These make a lovely handmade Christmas gift, especially if you have a silicon tray with festive shapes. Best of all you can pop them in a jar and wrap sustainably to avoid plastic packaging.

DIY Non Toxic Christmas Melts

1/2 cup Coconut Oil

30g Beeswax Pallets

1ml Grapefruit Essential Oil

1ml Sweet Orange Essential Oil

5 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil 

3 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

3 drops Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil

Place the coconut oil and beeswax in a double boiler and melt, stir to combine, take off the heat and add the essential oils. Pour the mixture carefully into your tray making each melt the same size. I used an ice tray and had no problem getting the melts out once they had set which only took half an hour in the fridge.
