Essential oils don’t just smell great, they also contain hundreds of different components some of which are beneficial to our health. Several studies have shown that certain essential oils have antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral benefits that may be beneficial to the immune system.
By making your own diffuser oils, you can save money and ensure that only pure essential oils are used and not fragrance oils that can have harmful toxins, which you don’t want wafting around your home.
This immunity blend uses the following oils …
Frankincense Essential Oil eases anxiety and stress and has a wonderful aroma that can boost your mood.
Clove Bud Essential Oil is a potent antioxidant with a spicy aroma. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and pain-easing properties.
Check out this 2011 studyTrusted Source which found that clove essential oil reduced the immune response related to T cells and innate immune cells, lowering inflammation levels. Meanwhile, the immune response associated with antibodies and other proteins was boosted.
Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil supports immune activity and provides powerful protection against bacteria and viruses.
Lavender True Essential Oil encourages restorative sleep as well as decreases stress. Stress and sleep are both contributing factors for lowered immunity. Lavender also has antioxidant properties, protecting the cells from free radicals.
DIY Immune Boost Reed Diffuser
3 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
3 drops Clove Bud Essential Oil
3 drops Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil
3 drops Lavender True Essential Oil
50ml Di Propylene Glycol or Sweet Almond Oil
Pour the di propylene glycol or sweet almond oil into the base of your diffuser, add the essential oils and stir with a reed to combine.
Add the reeds and leave for 5 minutes then flip them end to end. Do this every week or so.
I don’t usually suggest a synthetic option, however, you may prefer to use di propylene glycol as it lasts longer and travels up the reeds more effectively.
Although it’s not natural like sweet almond or jojoba oil, di propylene glycol lasts longer; this colourless liquid has no scent and is low in toxicity. The recipe has both options so it’s up to you which you choose.
Also, keep in mind that a pure essential oil blend will not be as strong as the overpowering scent of a commercial reed diffuser that uses synthetically made fragrances. With this natural blend, you’ll need to flip the reeds every so often to refresh the scent, especially when using a carrier oil instead of di propylene glycol.
