Our friend, blogger and healer Ash from Soul House has shared a lovely article on how to clear your crystals, something we do at home on a regular basis. If you’d like to purchase one of Ash’s beautiful handmade taonga you can check out the different options and healing properties of the crystals here.

“More and more people are starting to embrace the healing properties of crystals. I know this because of the response the crystal taonga I make have received.  In light of this, I thought I would share a blog on crystal care, or more specifically, how to cleanse and clear your taonga of the day-to-day energies it may absorb.
Crystals are no different to the human body in that they absorb the energies that they are exposed to. Crystals that are used sporadically don’t need to be cleansed or cleared as frequently, but those that are worn daily like the crystal taonga need it more regularly.”
Below are several different ways you can cleanse and clear your crystals:

Moon light

Placing your crystals in the full/new moon light is the most traditional and common method. You can lay your crystals out a day before, during, or the day after as the moon’s energy is still operating at it’s peak. You can place them outside under shelter or on your window sill. Whatever suits you.

It doesn’t matter if it is overcast or raining as the moon’s energy isn’t limited by it’s natural surroundings (neither are you).

Pros: It’s free and a powerful energy neutraliser for crystals

Cons: Regularly used crystals still need to be cleared daily

Selenite

My crystal taonga resting on a Selenite rod

Selenite has to be my fave. The beautiful rod pictured above is a piece from my own quaint collection. One of it’s many properties is to cleanse and clear energy (go figure). When I get home or when I am not wearing my taonga, I rest them on this beautiful crystal. As a result, they are ready for me to wear any time.

Selenite is probably the most common crystal I possess. I have a few in different rooms around the house and I use it to cleanse my healing room and the crystal tools I use post healing sessions.

Pros: I can’t recommend this crystal highly enough

Cons: I can’t think of any

Himalayan Rock Salt

Like Selenite, Himalayan rock salt has cleansing and clearing properties. Many people place bowls of it around their homes to cleanse the atmosphere. It’s also what salt lamps are made out of.

Simply place it in a bowl and rest your crystals on top.

Pros: Himalayan rock salt is cheap and can be bought from just about anywhere

Cons: It can scratch and leave marks on polished or Aura Quartz crystals. Best suited for rough cut, natural crystals

Crystal Clusters

Another one of my faves is simply resting my taonga on a crystal cluster. A cluster is essentially a family of small crystals grouped together radiating out from a shared space. Rest your taonga on a cluster whenever you are not wearing it to clear it’s energy.

Pros: You can buy a crystal cluster from just about any crystal shop. They are very beautiful and decorative. They also come in different sizes and prices vary. Clusters point in various directions so it’s energy radiates out into the room it rests in.

Cons: It’s going to be tough to choose one

White Light

White light is more of a visualisation tool where you imagine or sense that white light is flowing in and around your crystals. As you visualise this you trust and know that they are cleared.

Pros: It’s free. I use white light visualisation in my home after a healing session

Cons: It will difficult to use if you don’t have a strong visual sense

Smudging

Smudging is an ancient American Indian tool to cleanse and clear energies. You simply light dried sage, blow out the flame and allow the smoke to waft over the crystals.

You can buy smudge sticks from health and spiritual stores but I find these unnecessarily over priced. Instead, I buy a bunch from my local supermarket for $3. If you buy a smudge stick, undo the string that holds it together and uses pieces of it instead of using the whole stick. It will smoke better and it will last longer.

Pros: You don’t need a lot and it can last a long time

Cons: You would mainly want to use this method on occasion not all the time. Some people aren’t fans of the smell

Sun, Water, Sea

Many cleanse their crystals using sunlight, sea and tap water. It’s not something I would really recommend because the sun can discolour your crystals, whilst salt water can rust them; tap water on the other hand isn’t too bad but there are so many impurities that can be found in it. Instead, I would recommend fresh, flowing water from a natural stream. If you do do this make sure you dry the crystals thoroughly to prevent rusting and deterioration.

Wearing your taonga outside or inside your clothing

As well as emitting healing energy, crystals are also able to absorb the energies they are exposed to. This is why I recommend for those who are sensitive or wear Clear Quartz crystals to wear them beneath their clothing near their skin so that they alone benefit from the crystal’s healing energy and so they don’t absorb external energies.
