NASA recommends we should have at least 17 plants in an area of 500m2 to oxygenate the air, especially in the bedroom to improve sleep quality and fight insomnia.
One of the best plants for this is the Peace Lily which eliminates air-borne toxins and chemicals like trichloroethylene and formaldehyde, however there are many more with very good air cleaning qualities.
Kings Plant Barn here in New Zealand has a great article on the subject, here’s an excerpt from their article …
“As part of a clean air study, NASA put together a list of air filtering houseplants in 1989, partly with an aim to send them out of this world and use them to help clean the air on space stations.
Thankfully this research can also help the grounded among us, as they can also be used to clean the air in our homes, help neutralise the effects of sick building syndrome, take in carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and absorb toxic agents like formaldehyde; benzene; xylene and toluene; ammonia; and trichloroethylene.”
