Natural Health Laws are Changing

If you saw our previous post on this topic earlier this year you will be aware that the New Zealand Government had re-introduced the “Therapeutic Products Bill”. Unfortunately this bill has since been passed and has the potential to place additional financial burdens on manufacturers and end users of many natural products that have previously been sold and relied upon by millions of New Zealanders.

In response to this, Healthpost have created a petition that currently has over 20,000 signatures to ‘urge the New Zealand Government to make important changes to new natural health laws, to ensure your favourite products and brands remain accessible and affordable’. Read below for more information on the nature of the request and reason for the petition.

Petition Request – That the House of Representatives: 1) Develop legislation specifically for natural health products, separate from medicines. 2) Ask the Government to approve all products and ingredients currently available in New Zealand with a history of safe use, along with all those with a history of safe use in other countries with equivalent or higher standards than New Zealand.

Petition Reason – We are concerned the Therapeutic Products Bill will greatly reduce consumer choice and increase the cost of natural health products in New Zealand by requiring a medicines regulator to individually assess every natural health product and ingredient for approval, irrespective of a proven history of safe use. We ask that this legislation be amended to better support continued consumer choice and affordable access to a wide range of safe and effective natural health products.

The Therapeutic Products Bill is a new law that will change the way natural health products are regulated in New Zealand.
