duvet inner

Despite our best efforts to keep the floors clean with all of the construction going on next door (sadly the little house and gardens are gone and three large homes are being built), it often feels like a never ending battle. Just when you think you’ve caught up on the cleaning, there’s muddy cat paws all over the place.

Just when I was in the middle of washing our duvet cover Casper decided that the bed was the perfect spot for a nap. Our pristine duvet inner was covered in little paw prints!

I haven’t cleaned a duvet inner before so this situation left me with a challenge: how do you properly clean a duvet?

I decided to take the duvet to the laundromat up the road which has big machines. Instead of commercial laundry powder I used our gentle yet very effective wool soap jelly (link to the recipe is below), once done it was a quick drive home to hang the duvet in the sun.

I’ve also found this great guide which suggests waiting for a sunny day and putting them in the bath or a child’s paddle pool to wash.

We are supposed to wash our duvet inners once a year apparently so I figure I was long overdue to take the plunge!

Tips for Deep Cleaning your Duvet

Choose a laundromat with large machines as duvets are bulky and require extra space to clean thoroughly without damaging the fabric or filling.

Use a gentle detergent, preferably a natural soap that is designed for delicate fabrics, such as the laundry liquid recipe below which is specifically for wool and delicate fabrics.

Wash on a low heat or delicate cycle.

Dry thoroughly, preferably hang the duvet outside in the sun, ensure it’s completely dry to prevent any mildew or odours.
