Grant (who has an egg intolerance) is pretty happy about the Vegan Society NZ’s newest campaign – World Egg Free Month.

For the month of October try putting ‘The Chicken before the Egg’ and explore the seemingly endless array of egg-free dishes or come up with some of your own. We’ll be sharing a variety of egg free recipes over the next four weeks.

The following article from Vegan Society explains in more detail how we can live without eggs in our diet … the detrimental effect of them and the treatment of chickens.

Perhaps for those of us who are new to this concept we could treat October as the month to try something different and cook our favourite dish with an egg replacement – I wonder if anyone in the family would even notice? Plant based MasterChef Aaron Brunet has some delicious recipes if you need any inspiration.

It seems that more and more people are becoming vegan for a variety of reasons or at least open to the idea of trying something new. Not only is this more positive for our health but the environment and our animals too.

If you’re thinking of altering your diet, take the time to do your research well and reach out to trusted and established societies that can provide you with enough information for you to make a steady transition that won’t seem daunting or leave you “hungry” and ready to quit too soon. Learn and understand how to enjoy plant based meals and ensure you create well balanced meals with all the nutrients you need.

If you run a cafe or eatery you may want to promote some “egg free specials”. Think scrambled tofu, vegan baking, sandwiches, mousse, meringues, omelettes etc. If you need some inspiration visit https://www.vegansociety.org.nz/tryvegan/eggalternatives

Join in and have fun without eggs. Let both the Vegan Society and Green Goddess know what you get up to for Egg Free Month by tagging them in your social media posts and follow Vegan Society for more ideas on how to be healthy without animal products.

You can help grow veganism in New Zealand too, by supporting their work. They offer businesses the opportunities to connect to a vegan customer base and vice versa through their business membership.

The Vegan Society of Aotearoa NZ is a registered charity.
