The Auckland Library of Tools (ALoT) Officially launched on Saturday March 30th of this year and is a community project spearheaded by Amanda Chapman, Tom Greer, and a growing list of enthusiastic volunteers.
ALoT members will have access to a wide range of tools and equipment for construction, wood and metal work, textiles, and gardening, as well as 3D design and fabrication.
If you’re not in Auckland there are tool libraries in Christchurch, Lyttleton, Wellington, and Raglan that I know of, for other areas a quick google search will bring up any info.
ALoT hopes to create a community hub where people are empowered to learn, share and create, and perhaps even get to know their neighbours. Instrumental to this is their partnership with Hackland, an existing makerspace located in Kingsland.
Have you been in to see them lately? Their inventory is growing rapidly and their new(ish) corner of Hackland is already full to the brim! Luckily for them, the lawnmowers and gardening equipment are flying out the door. If you’re keen to get stuck into your garden this spring, make sure you reserve items before dropping by for all your DIY needs.
Check out their website to find out how to reserve tools or renew them once on loan.

ALoT on Tour
ALoT Co-founder, Amanda, recently visited Iceland, where she and a friend drove and camped around the Ring Road. Instead of borrowing camping gear from the tourist hire places, Amanda became a member of the Reykjavik Tool Library. “It was great to be able to support another tool library and save ourselves money. The lovely founder of the tool library, Anna, is also into reducing waste and loaned us a few extra waste saving items.”
Volunteer for ALoT
ALoT is a not-for-profit run by volunteers. We need help running the library during open hours, and maintaining and organizing tools. Volunteer perks include hanging out with cool people, access to the maker space and tools, and a 3-month volunteer membership. Get in touch or join our Facebook group if you’d like to be involved, we greatly appreciate your help!
Donate
The library is a non-profit organisation, rub by volunteers and sustained by our membership fees. If you like what we’re doing, and have money to spare, we’d greatly appreciate whatever you can give. Donations go towards the purchase of new tools, maintenance and renovations.
We’re always on the lookout for new tools, storage solutions and equipment. Our library stocks tools for building and construction, as well as gardening, textiles, jewellery making and more. If you have items you can give the library please fill in this form.
