washing pillows

I have to confess that I have never thought about washing pillows – who doesn’t love sleeping on fresh, fluffy pillows, however constantly buying new ones is not very cost effective or eco friendly.

Use this method to wash and dry your pillows at home and restore them to their former glory. You can also do this for cushion inners. If your machine is not large enough head up to your local laundromat where they have large machines for pet beds, duvets and the like.

This is quite a simple process as long as your washing machine is large enough to fit two pillows. Remove pillow case covers and pillow protectors if you use them. Place both pillows into the washing machine. Add a tennis ball to help clean the pillows. If you wash one pillow at a time your machine will not be balanced.

Wash the pillows in warm water on a regular cycle in a top loader. Add 1 tablespoon of Green Goddess Natural-San and 1 tablespoon of Green Goddess Natural Laundry Powder (any scent) and a teaspoon of Green Goddess Premium Borax (you can leave this out but it does help to do a thorough clean).

When the cycle is done do an extra cold water rinse and spin, you can add 20 drops of lavender essential oil if using lavender laundry powder or unscented laundry powder, this will give them a lovely fresh odour and also helps with sleep. The extra rinse is to make sure the pillows have been adequately rinsed.

Tumble dry the pillows on low heat. Toss in a couple of dryer balls or new tennis balls wrapped in socks to help fluff the pillows and prevent the filling from clumping.

**One of our lovely customers did a bit of google research and apparently a front loader is ok for washing pillows. Plus, she found out that the drying time is about an hour but to do it in 15 minute increments to check how dry the pillows get.**
