Most of us don’t have the ability to save circus lions, but we do have the ability to use our consumer power for good.
Recently SAFE exposed the egg industry’s awful new colony battery cages and as a result, Countdown said they would no longer sell eggs from the farm in question. But Countdown is continuing to sell eggs from other supplies who cage hens. In Australia, Countdown’s owners have committed to stop selling cage eggs in Woolworths by 2018, so why can’t Countdown in New Zealand do the same?
SAFE is asking people to simply hop over to Countdown’s Facebook page and leave a polite message asking them to commit to phasing out ALL eggs from standard battery cages and colony cages. If you are not on Facebook (or you’re feeling particularly motivated and want to do this too!), you can email them.
This isn’t just about one supermarket chain’s sale of cage eggs. It’s much, much bigger than that. With laws failing animals, companies are in an increasingly powerful position to help end the abuse of animals in factory farms. McDonald’s is the perfect example, with their announcement that they will stop selling cage-eggs throughout New Zealand. This will make a big difference for animals.
Now imagine the domino effect when Countdown, too, stops selling cage-eggs.
