Ditch the Mothballs – Try This Safer, Natural Alternative
Did you know that naphthalene, the main ingredient in conventional mothballs, is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the EPA? With potential health risks and that overpowering chemical smell, it’s no wonder many people are looking for safer options.
Thankfully, there’s a natural way to protect your woollens, blankets, sheets, and seasonal clothing - and it smells amazing too! This DIY moth repellent uses a simple mix of herbs and essential oils to help keep moths at bay, without the toxins.
Say goodbye to holes in your favourite jumpers, and hello to a fresh, fragrant wardrobe — naturally.
For this recipe, you’ll need dry herbs; you can purchase these or dry them yourself at home. If you’re thinking of using different essential oils, be warned, there are some that moths are attracted too, don’t use lemon, mint, sweet orange or bay leaf essential oils.

Scrunch up and chop the rosemary, lavender and bay leaves, then combine them with the cloves and peppercorns. Measure out even portions and put into bags.
Next add a drop of each essential oil to each bag and tie shut. This recipe should make about four small bags.
I used little jute jewellery bags as the sachets, you can buy them at haberdashery shops.
If you can turn your hand to sewing you can make your own bags.
