Preserving is such a satisfying process, one that used to be commonplace back in the day before we all had fridges and access to the huge array of canned and bottled goods that are now readily available.
When preserving food it’s vital to ensure bacteria and fungi can not survive and thrive in your preserves. Sterilising your jars is imperative, this method is tried and true.
How To Sterilise Jars
Make sure you have good pot holders or pot mitts on hand. You’ll also need an oven tray big enough for the jars you are sterilising. Once your jars have been sterilised do not touch the rims or the inside of the lids to ensure there’s no contamination.
The first step is to wash your jars in hot water with dish wash, I use our Green Goddess Hemp & Eucalyptus Dish Wash. Once clean, rinse and leave to dry.
Next place the jars on the oven tray leaving space between them for the air to circulate. Heat in your oven at 120C for 10-15 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave the jars to cool down before removing.
Sterilise metal lids in boiling water for 5 minutes and then leave in water, once cool remove and leave to dry.
If drying on a tea towel ensure it’s clean.
If you don’t have an oven you can boil the jars in a large pot for 10 minutes, let cool, remove and leave to dry.
