Plastic Free July started in 2011 in Perth and has now spread throughout 26 countries. The aim is to raise awareness of the amount of plastic that we use by encouraging people to eliminate the use of single-use plastic for the month. So many products come packaged or served in plastic or come with plastic that is intended to be used only once and then thrown away
If refusing all single-use sounds a bit daunting, they suggest starting with the top four: plastic bags, bottles, takeaway coffee cups (with plastic lids), and straws. You can also choose how long you’d like to participate for: a day, a week, the whole month – or forever. They also suggest keeping a “dilemma bag” for any unavoidable plastic, that way you can see how much there actually is by the end of the challenge period.
Here at Wendyl’s, we are busy sourcing non-plastic alternatives to everyday products for you. This week we have bamboo toothbrushes and in the next few weeks we have a lovely alternative to plastic straws. If you’d like to give Plastic Free July a go, head along to their site, check out all the info and sign up.
