Natural Relief for Your Dog’s Skin: Simple Balms You Can Make at Home

If your dog struggles with persistent sores, itchy patches, or a habit of nibbling at their skin, you know how distressing it can be for both of you. Conventional treatments often contain harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, or ingredients that may not sit well with sensitive skin. Sometimes, a gentle, natural approach can make all the difference.

We've had these two simple yet effective salves recipes on our blog for quite some time, so I thought I'd share them again. You can easily make these at home using a handful of readily available ingredients.

Thanks to Cruz for being my model :)

Both recipes focus on soothing irritation, promoting healing, and supporting the skin’s natural recovery process. One uses sulphur, a time-tested ingredient known for its ability to heal wounds and discourage licking, while the other combines witch hazel and aloe vera to calm itchiness and reduce inflammation.

Both salves are quick to make, cost-effective, and can be a great addition to your natural pet care toolkit. Always remember to keep an eye on the wound’s healing progress and, if needed, consult your vet for ongoing issues.

Soothe Your Dog’s Skin Naturally

Does your dog have sores that won’t heal or a habit of nibbling at their skin? These simple, natural salves can help promote healing and reduce irritation.

Wound Healing Balm
If your dog tends to nibble at a sore, this salve may help. It contains sulphur, known for its healing properties, and the scent may even discourage further licking.

2 tablespoons petroleum jelly

1 teaspoon sulphur powder (MSM)

You can find sulphur powder at your chemist or order it online. Simply mix the ingredients together and apply a thin layer to the affected area.

Reduce Itch Balm
For itchy, irritated skin, this soothing blend helps calm inflammation and speed healing:

1 part witch hazel

2 parts aloe vera gel

Mix well and gently rub onto the affected area. The witch hazel helps reduce bacteria and itchiness, while the aloe vera cools and supports healing.
