Yellow sticky DIY fly paper with bugs attached

This is an interesting way to get rid of whitefly that I read about in one of mum’s gardening books. Flies, including whitefly, rather like the colour yellow, so much so that boards or weather proof yellow cards when placed in the garden will attract these airborne insects.

All you need to do is get some board, paint it yellow and apply petroleum jelly, mineral oil or some home made sticky goo (can be used to make fly paper too) all over the yellow area.

Securely place the boards throughout the garden where whitefly are most likely to have taken up residence.

The whitefly will be attracted to the yellow, fly onto the board and stay there.
If you have a green house you can get post it notes, smear which ever sticky substance you have over them and stick to the windows. You can also do this inside your house – but it doesn’t look that great!

Sticky Goo

1/4 cup white sugar

1/4 cup inexpensive honey or maple syrup

2 Tablespoons water

Heat all ingredients together in a pot on the stove stirring to combine, when thick take off the heat, let cool until warm and paint over y0ur yellow card.

The goo can also be used to make fly paper to catch flies around your home. Brown paper cut into lengths works well, paint with the goo and hang with string near entrances or where flies are the most bothersome.
