Using an aerosol dry shampoo for weeks on end can leave you with residue on your scalp. This can cause your scalp to itch and become flaky, you may also get sores, dry lumps or even bald patches.

So what is in a can of dry shampoo?

The propellant that is used to force the chemicals out of the can and into a fine mist is made from liquefied petroleum gas which is commonly a blend of butane, propane, and isobutane gas. Not so good for the environment or your scalp.

Then there’s the product itself. Here are some of the less than appealing ingredients that I found in a can at the local chemist.

Alcohol Denat., Fragrance, Limonene, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate.

Benzyl Benzoate alone can cause skin rashes, a stinging sensation on the skin, hives, itching and skin inflammation according to Web MD.

Alcohol Denat. is an abbreviation for denatured alcohol otherwise known as ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol) Depending on quantities in a product it can also cause skin irritation.

Limonene is not that great for aquatic life – but is listed as safe for skin.

Linalool can cause eczema. For more information see this website.

Under the ingredient ‘fragrance’ there could be any number of toxins, most often fragrance is a synthetically produced scent and many are known or suspected endocrine disruptors.

For more information on ‘fragrance’ and what this term may be hiding check out the movie STINK, the movie the chemical industry does not want you to see

Dry shampoos are designed to be used in between washes as a time saver and to help with excess oil. They should not take the place of washing your hair, whether you are into the No Shampoo movement (where you use water and no product),  a shampoo bar (better for your hair, scalp and the environment), or use a traditional shampoo, it’s recommended to wash your hair at least once a week.
