lichen on drive

Winter is traditionally the time when moss and mould make our paths, decks, driveways and steps unsightly and slippery, this can be positively dangerous on these hard surfaces. Once the weather dries up the problem can often resolve itself on these surfaces, however the spores will still be there and growth will return in damp conditions.

Luckily there’s an easy way to kill it off. Our Green Goddess Premium Soda Ash has a high alkalinity (pH of 11) which kills off algae-like growths, liverworts, lichens and moss. It’s very easy to apply, is non-toxic and effective.

Soda ash is baking soda’s older, gruntier brother. It’s a powerful natural cleaner but unlike its counterpart, it cannot be eaten. Soda ash, otherwise known as sodium carbonate, is fine with a powdery consistency whereas washing soda (often called soda ash) is gritty and harder to work with.

You’ll need a fine day when no rain is forecast as the soda ash needs at least 12 hours to start working. Sprinkle the soda ash over the area with the moss or lichen and wet slightly with a gentle shower of water from the hose, leave for at least 12 hours.

Once you see the growth start to die off, brush with a stiff outdoor broom. Hose the area once the slime is dislodged.

Use this method on pavers, concrete, wood, tiles and other hard outdoor surfaces.
