With Anzac Day coming up, perhaps it’s time to give the silver a good clean, even if you’re only bringing it out for family or looking at it shinning in your cabinet. Maybe you have some silver jewellery that needs a little sparkle put back in its life?

Cleaning silver the natural way has never been easier and with only two ingredients!

You’ll need a container large enough to hold the items to be cleaned, preferably made of aluminium, such as a pot, pan or jam pan, etc. Alternatively, using enough aluminium foil to cover the bottom of a glass bowl will do.

Make a solution by mixing one tablespoon of soda ash per litre of hot water. Make enough to cover what you are cleaning. Immerse the items, making sure they make contact with the aluminium when in the solution.

Lightly tarnished items should come clean in seconds, while heavily tarnished items may need repeat treatment and even the help of a soft-bristled brush to help rub off the tarnish.

Rinse in clear water and dry with a soft cloth.

WARNING:  Do not immerse any non-metal items or items with painted surfaces, as damage could be caused. Be extra cautious with jewellery and ensure it is silver and not silver plated.

**Always do a test with the edge of one item first to ensure this will work on your silver – if your items are very old take care – you may need to reduce the amount of soda ash**
