I love this awesome initiative! Wouldn’t it be amazing if other areas adopted this idea of a Re: Maker Space so more people had access to communal tools, resources and skills within their local communities? The ReMaker Space was created by The ReCreators, a social enterprise based in Tāmaki Makaurau and the Waikato delivering a variety of unique DIY skills-based classes.
Read on to find out about Re: Maker Space and upcoming workshops at the West Auckland Re: Maker Space in Massey including Circular Woodworking, Creating Sustainable and Ethical Skincare, Beginners Sewing and Design, Macrame, and Wooden Furniture Restoration.
From Re: Maker Space …
We want to create a space that delivers practical, creative and innovative pathways that unlock values from localised waste streams through the sharing of equipment, space and ideas. Creating a West Auckland epicentre for a movement that will connect our creative community, rangatahi, tamariki and green entrepreneurs to ideas, resources, equipment and education to support a sustainable, low-carbon way of living.
Our story dates back to 2019 when we joined a group of community members who were keen on a maker space. We did our research through a feasibility study, looking at lots of maker spaces globally and nationally.
In October 2022, The ReCreators found the perfect location that could house separate areas for woodworking, crafting, sewing, a refillery, upcycle shop and a communal area.
Our vision is to be part of a circular economy through sharing tools, resources and skills in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The ReCreators
The ReCreators is a social enterprise based in Tāmaki Makaurau & the Waikato delivering a variety of unique upcycled DIY skills-based classes. They are a collective of upcycling creatives who share skills, design ideas and zero-waste thinking.
The vision is to guide people in practical design thinking, skills and materials that can be creatively reused, reducing the need to take resources from Papatūānuku as well as reducing landfill.
Upcycling promotes mental well-being through creativity, mindfulness and connecting with meaningful making. They offer various upcycling workshops for children, adults and corporates, as well as an online store.
The materials we use are either discarded or offcuts that would otherwise be destined for landfill. We feel they are beautiful and deserve a second chance on this planet.
At West Auckland’s RE: MAKER SPACE we aim to offer shared community workshops. The ReCreators will continue to deliver on-site and across the region and welcome other creatives to book our venue to run creative workshops.
