If I buy perfectly ripe bananas now, how long do I have until they become overripe? Usually not very long; a few days at the most in summer and a little longer in winter. This is because bananas produce quite a bit of ethylene gas. You’ve probably heard of helping other fruit to ripen by putting a banana in a sealed bag along with the fruit.
But did you know that you can slow down the ripening process by wrapping the stems? When you wrap the stems of your bunch of bananas it helps to keep the fruit away from the ethylene gas that’s naturally produced in that part of the banana while it ripens.
To ensure this technique actually works you have to wrap around the stems tightly and rewrap every time a banana is taken from the bunch. Instead of using plastic to do this try using a small Honey Wrap, it works a treat and saves plastic waste.
