Water has always been my first choice of drink when it comes to hydration. I’ve never had the want or need to pour heaps of sugar into it or make it blue, or red, or green, or any other colour. I do, however, love it with a squeeze of lemon and sometimes a slice of cucumber, especially during the humid summer months.
Getting kids to drink plenty of water can be a challenge. We have one child that drinks litres of filtered water a day and another that hardly ever wants to. If you’re having trouble convincing your kids that water is the best option, you might like to try this recipe for a healthy lemon flavoured electrolyte drink.
Instead of artificial colours, flavours and sugar – or worse, high-fructose corn syrup – this recipe uses raw Manuka honey, turmeric, fresh lemon juice, sea salt, and Wendyl’s premium baking soda. It’s especially useful if you have a sick child, as they can become dehydrated very quickly; getting and keeping them hydrated is vitally important on the path back to wellness.
Lemon Electrolyte Sport Drink
3 Tbl Earthbound Manuka Honey
3 Slices fresh turmeric root (you may substitute with fresh ginger, if preferred, or omit.)
1 Lemon, juiced
1/4 tsp Sea salt (I like Himalayan)
1/8 tsp Wendyls Premium Baking Soda
4 cups Filtered water
Add 1/8 tsp Wendyls Premium Epsom Salts (for additional electrolytes, needed to restore fluid balance)
Here’s what to do
Boil 1 cup of water with fresh turmeric or ginger root for 10 minutes until the water is golden in colour.
Remove the root slices from the water. Stir in the sea salt, baking soda, and raw honey until dissolved.
Add the lemon or lime juice, plus the remaining water (or use ice to chill it quickly if you prefer), and stir to combine.
Refrigerate until serving. This lasts for up to 3 days.
Good to Treat – Diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, and dehydration from physical activity.
Contraindications – Do not use turmeric or ginger in those with a bleeding/clotting disorder or if about to undergo surgery — it’s a blood thinner. Be cautious when giving diabetics honey. Do not give to children under 1 year of age.
