Screen Shot 2015-03-04 at 9.44.43 AMLast week Pearl put me onto these frozen mango pieces which I wrote up for my Wendyl Wants to Know column in the NZ Herald. These are great because they are the fruit frozen, which means it is just as nutritionally sound.
While I was researching this I found to my horror that most mangoes that come into New Zealand are irradiated for biosecurity reasons, which means they are exposed to radiation to kill off any bugs. As we can’t grow mangoes here, they all must be flown in from somewhere.  Some environmental groups believe that while the process kills the insects as well as mould and bacteria it also damages the chemical structure of fruit and I agree with them.
If a fruit has been irradiated it must clearly state this at point of sale so be aware next time you buy one, or simply go for the frozen which is harvested and frozen in Chile so there is no need to irradiate it.
