Have you checked the ingredients in your mascara lately? If it’s a conventional mascara brand, it most likely contains fragrance, parabens, PEG-40 stearate, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and triethanolamine (TEA).
Instead of being put off and giving up on mascara altogether, try making this four ingredient recipe that can help to darken, lengthen and thicken your lashes.
The activated charcoal stains the eyelashes whilst the coconut oil, being full of antioxidants, stimulates the lash, it also contains antibacterial properties. The Aloe Vera helps to repair dead skin cells promoting hair growth due to proteolytic enzymes and the beeswax holds the mascara formula together whilst holding in moisture and reducing dryness.
Natural Mascara Recipe
You’ll need a clean mascara container with a brush, if you can’t find a new one to purchase you can thoroughly clean an old one or use a small glass jar with a lid and dip your brush in when ready to use. Make sure you keep everything very clean as you don’t want to introduce bacteria into your finished product.
1 tablespoon extra-virgin coconut oil
2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
1 1/2 teaspoons beeswax, grated
Activated Charcoal: 1/4 teaspoon for light black mascara, 1/2 teaspoon for black mascara
Directions
Put coconut oil, aloe vera gel and grated beeswax in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until the beeswax is completely melted. Add the charcoal to the oil mixture. Stir until completely incorporated. Remove from heat.
Pour the mixture into the mascara container. Do this with a small funnel or by pouring the mixture into a little plastic bag – push the mixture into one corner, cut a small hole in the tip of the bag and gently squeeze into the mascara tube.
Store in the fridge, it will be ready to use once it has cooled. This recipe will make around 55g of mascara.
Tips
If you need more hold to your mascara, add more beeswax. If you need more moisture, add more aloe vera gel. For darker mascara add more charcoal. Store in fridge. Keep the lid on tightly so it doesn’t dry out. Replace in six months time.
