Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation in throat tissues. It can provide a soothing sensation and ease discomfort whilst aiding digestion and reducing gastrointestinal discomfort. A healthy gut is essential for a strong immune system.

Onions are rich in antioxidants, particularly quercetin which has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that can help support the immune system’s response to infections.

Garlic contains allicin, a compound with potent antimicrobial properties. Allicin has been shown to have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal effects, which can aid in fighting off infections.

Homemade Sore Throat Syrup

1 medium-sized onion

4-5 garlic cloves

A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger

1 cup of honey (preferably raw and organic)

How to make the syrup

Peel and chop the onion and garlic into small pieces. Grate the ginger leaving the skin on.

In a clean glass jar spoon in the honey then layer the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger.

Stir gently to combine.

Seal the jar tightly and let it sit at room temperature for at least 24 hours, allowing the flavours to infuse. Give the jar a shake every now and then.

After 24 hours, the syrup should have thickened as the honey draws out the juices from the onion, garlic, and ginger.

You can strain the syrup to remove the solids, or you can leave them in for added potency. If you prefer a smoother syrup, strain it through a fine mesh strainer.

Transfer the syrup to a clean glass container and store it in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.

Dosage

Take one tablespoon of the syrup daily to support your immune system during periods of increased vulnerability or when feeling under the weather.

If you have a sore throat, you can take one tablespoon of the syrup every few hours to soothe the irritation.
