Have you ever looked at the ingredients in a bottle of calamine lotion? Depending on which brand you choose they can contain iron oxide, ferric oxide, fragrance, and phenol which has been banned in many countries for its organ system toxicity and bioaccumulation. Yuk, surely there’s natural version.

I went through some old recipe books and our archives and found that it’s pretty easy to make your own. This recipe is safe to use on all the family to treat mild itchiness; anything from insect bites, stings, sunburn, rashes, to a break out of chicken pox.

Ferric oxide is what makes calamine lotion pink – we won’t be putting any in this homemade version so don’t expect a pink lotion. Instead, we will use zinc oxide which is also in Wendyl’s natural sunscreen recipe.

DIY Natural Calamine Lotion

1 Tbsp Pink Himalayan Salt, finely ground

1 Tbsp Green Goddess Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

1 Tbsp Non Nano Zinc Oxide available online or at most health stores

(You can also add Bentonite Clay instead of zinc if you don’t have any on hand)

1 Tbsp Green Goddess Premium Baking Soda

15 drops Lavender True Essential Oil

Filtered water as needed

Here’s how to make it

In a glass or ceramic bowl (don’t use metal bowls as it can react) mix together the salt, zinc or clay, and baking soda then add the apple cider and just enough water to make a creamy paste. Finally add the lavender essential oil and mix well.

The lotion is best stored in a glass jar in the fridge, it will keep for a couple of months. To use apply liberally to the effected area. This recipe makes approximately half a cup.
