cough cold relief tonic

This cold and cough relief tonic helps to alleviate sore throats and offers some relief from cold symptoms. Although it does not have the most pleasant taste, last year this remedy was very effective in alleviating my cough and helping to ward off my cold.

When combined, the cayenne pepper, ginger, garlic, Manuka honey, and lemon juice in this recipe offer natural anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immune-boosting, and soothing effects.

Cayenne pepper: Cayenne pepper contains an active compound called capsaicin, which gives it its spicy flavour. Capsaicin has been associated with various health benefits, including pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects. In the context of a sore throat, cayenne pepper’s spiciness can provide a warming sensation and potentially help reduce discomfort.

Ginger: Ginger is well-known for its potential anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. It contains compounds called gingerols, which have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Ginger may help reduce inflammation in the throat, relieve pain, and alleviate symptoms associated with colds, such as coughing or congestion.

Garlic: Garlic has long been valued for its potential medicinal properties. It contains sulfur compounds, including allicin, which have antimicrobial and immune-boosting effects. Garlic may help fight off infections and support the immune system, which can be beneficial during a cold or when dealing with a sore throat.

Manuka honey: Manuka honey is often used as a natural remedy for soothing sore throats. It has natural antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that can support the immune system. A strong immune response is crucial for fighting off infections and reducing the severity of sore throat symptoms. Honey can also provide a coating effect on the throat, potentially relieving irritation and soothing discomfort.

Lemon juice: Lemon juice is a rich source of vitamin C, which is known to support the immune system and promote healing. The acidic nature of lemon juice may help break down mucus and provide temporary relief for congestion or coughing.
