Cranberry, apple and hazelnut crumble

Cranberry, Apple and Hazelnut Crumble is a delightful dessert that combines the tartness of cranberries, the sweetness of apples, and the nutty flavour of hazelnuts. It’s delicious served warm, straight from the oven as the warmth intensifies the flavours. I love the comforting aroma that fills the kitchen when baking this crumble.

The combination of cranberries and apples creates a perfect balance of sweet and tart flavours. The cranberries provide a tangy and slightly sour taste, while the apples add a natural sweetness. This balance of flavours keeps the dessert from being overly sweet or too sour.

Cranberry, Apple & Hazelnut Crumble

2 cups cranberries (fresh or frozen)

3 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smiths work well)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts

1/2 cup butter, cold and cut into small cubes

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

Method

Preheat your oven to 190°C. Grease a baking dish.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cranberries and sliced apples. Toss them together and spread evenly in the prepared baking dish or ramekins.

In another bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, chopped hazelnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.

Add the cold butter cubes to the dry mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the cranberries and apples in the baking dish.

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.

Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with a scoop of coconut yoghurt or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
