cinnamon turmeric hot toddy

Flu season is upon us, so it’s a good idea to keep yourself as healthy as possible and, if you do get struck down, boost your immune system. As colds and flus are viruses there’s no quick fix. I’ve never taken Tamiflu or had a flu vaccine, I find that sticking to natural remedies and supplements helps me to recover quickly, or not get ill at all.

Two other things that are vitally important are to take time out to rest and to drink plenty of fluids. This delicious hot toddy can help with fluid intake, it’s also soothing on the throat and is packed with antioxidants.

Cinnamon is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It may help fight off pathogens and reduce inflammation in the body, which can support overall immune function.

Ginger is widely recognised for its immune-boosting properties. It contains compounds such as gingerol and zingerone, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Ginger can potentially help strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and alleviate symptoms of respiratory infections.

Turmeric contains a bioactive compound called curcumin, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin can support immune function by modulating immune responses and reducing inflammation in the body.

Drinking hot water itself can provide soothing effects, help relieve congestion, and promote overall comfort when dealing with respiratory symptoms. Staying hydrated is also essential for optimal immune function.

Honey is often added to hot toddy recipes for its soothing properties. While it’s not directly related to the immune system, honey has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that may support general health and well-being.

Cinnamon, Ginger and Turmeric Hot Toddy

1 Fresh turmeric root, 1 cm piece diced. Fresh turmeric can be found at most Indian grocers.

1 Fresh ginger root, 2cm piece diced

1 Cinnamon stick and 4 Cloves

Juice of 1 Lemon

1 tsp Raw Manuka honey

In a small saucepan add the turmeric, ginger, cinnamon stick and cloves with 500ml water. Bring to the boil then put the lid on and simmer for 10 minutes on a low heat. Take off the heat and strain into a cup (there will be enough for another cup later). Add the lemon juice and raw Manuka honey, stir and enjoy. I keep the ingredients in the fridge for up to three days and reuse with boiling water, fresh lemon juice and more honey.

To super boost this drink add 10 drops of Nanofy Curcumin – will be available on our website within the week.
