How To Use Salt To Remove Curtain Mould

Posted on June 03 2026

Mould and mildew on curtains can be frustrating, especially during the colder, damper months when condensation becomes a regular visitor in many New Zealand homes. While there are plenty of commercial products available, sometimes the simplest solutions are the ones that work best.

This traditional method uses nothing more than salt and water to help remove mildew from curtains naturally. It's an old household trick that has stood the test of time and can be particularly effective on net curtains and other washable fabrics.

Once you've removed the mould, prevention is just as important as treatment. A few simple steps can help reduce the likelihood of mildew returning and keep your curtains looking fresher for longer. Here's how to use this surprisingly effective salt treatment and what to do afterwards to help keep mould at bay.

DID YOU KNOW?

You can remove mould from your curtains with salt water?

For mildew on curtains, carefully take them down and soak in a bucket of warm water in which you have dissolved 1kg of salt (not iodised). Soak overnight and then hang on the clothes line in the sun so that the creases fall out (do not rinse). The salt will dry and crystallise then brush off and the mould will come with it.

Check for colourfastness of your curtain fabric and do a spot test if you are unsure. I’ve used this method on net curtains with great success. Before you re-hang the curtains spray the underside (not the side that faces into the room) with Mould Magic. This products works wonders on hard surfaces as a mould prevention, it will help prevent mould on your curtains but not as well as it does on hard surfaces.
