Oil Pulling For Healthy Teeth & Gums

Oil Pulling For Healthy Teeth & Gums

When it comes to oral health, most of us think of brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups. But did you know there’s an ancient Ayurvedic practice that can take your dental care to the next level? It’s called oil pulling, and coconut oil is one of the best choices for it.

All you have to do is swish the oil around in your mouth for as long as you can to “pull” out toxins, bacteria, and debris. Then swish again with warm water and brush your teeth, floss and I like to also use a tongue scrapper and Salud Mouth Wash to make sure there's no bacteria left behind.

Coconut oil is particularly good for this as it's antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It also tastes milder than other oils traditionally used, like sesame oil, making it easier to stick with.

Why Coconut Oil Works

Antibacterial Power: Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is known to kill harmful bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans, one of the main causes of tooth decay.

Reduces Plaque and Gingivitis: Regular oil pulling helps reduce the buildup of plaque and improves gum health, lowering the risk of gingivitis and bleeding gums.

Freshens Breath: By removing odor-causing bacteria, it’s a natural remedy for bad breath.

Helps To Whiten Teeth Naturally: Over time, many people notice their teeth look brighter because surface stains are gently lifted away.

Supports Overall Health: Since oral bacteria are linked to issues like inflammation and heart health, keeping your mouth clean benefits your whole body.

How to Do Coconut Oil Pulling

It’s incredibly simple! Here’s how to get started:

Choose your oil: Use high-quality, cold-pressed organic coconut oil.

Measure it out: Place about 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth. (If it’s solid it will melt quickly once in your mouth).

Swish gently: Move the oil around your teeth and gums for 10–20 minutes or as long as you can to start with and work up to a longer time. Don’t gargle or swallow.

Spit it out: After pulling, spit the oil into a tissue, pot or bin (not the sink, as it can clog pipes over time).

Rinse thoroughly: Rinse with warm water, or even salt water for extra cleansing.

Brush your teeth: Finish with your usual brushing routine.

For best results, try oil pulling first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, before eating or drinking. And after brushing use a tongue scraper to remove any bacteria on your tongue.

Tips for Success

If 10 to 20 minutes feels too long, start with 5 minutes and build up.

Consistency matters! Aim for a few times a week, or daily if you can.

Pair oil pulling with good dental hygiene (brushing and flossing) for maximum benefits.
