Eco Homemade Christmas Presents
Posted on December 03 2025
Christmas doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive to be meaningful. In fact, some of the most cherished gifts are the ones made with time, love, and a little creativity.
If you’re trying to keep costs down this year, or simply want to move away from the rush of commercial gifting, making presents at home can be a wonderful alternative.
It’s a slower, more thoughtful way to celebrate the season, and it gives children and grandchildren the chance to get hands-on, learn new skills, and experience the joy of creating something for someone they care about.
These homemade gifts are fun to make, gentle on the budget, and full of heart, the perfect combination for a simple, conscious Christmas.
Homemade Spice Mixes
Collect small jars (baby food jars are ideal) and help your child create spice blends such as Moroccan rubs, Italian seasoning, or our popular herbed salt.
There are plenty of great recipes online if you want more ideas.
Once the jars are filled, have your child write out a few recipe suggestions using the spices and attach them to the jars with ribbon or string. A lovely, personalised touch.
Herb Cuttings & Potted Gifts
If you have a herb garden, many plants can easily be shared. Mints grow well from cuttings, and seeds like basil and parsley germinate quickly in warm weather.
Give old plastic plant pots a second life with a coat of paint, then decorate them with stickers or ribbon. Plant a herb cutting or sprinkle seeds into seed-raising mix, and you’ve got a beautiful windowsill gift.
Include a handwritten recipe — perhaps pesto or mint sauce — for an extra special addition.
Decorated Picture Frames
Second-hand shops often have simple wooden frames at great prices.
Children can decorate them with:
Buttons
Shells
Dried flowers
Non Toxic Paint (for older kids)
You can even frame one of your child’s artworks to make a meaningful keepsake for parents or grandparents.
Homemade Cards & Wrapping Paper
Store-bought cards and wrapping can be surprisingly expensive, so why not make your own?
Pick up some colourful card and paper from a stationary or art store, then get the kids painting Christmas trees, stars, and angels. Glitter makes wonderful “snow.”
Leftover felt pieces can also be cut into shapes and glued on.
For wrapping paper, use potato stamps dipped in paint to create patterns on plain newsprint — simple, fun, and unique.
DIY Bath Bombs
These are always a hit and very easy to make.
Bath Bomb Recipe:
1 ½ Tbsp citric acid
2 Tbsp baking soda
½ tsp natural food colouring
5 drops essential oil
Mix until slightly sticky. If it’s too dry, add a few drops of olive oil.
Press into silicone ice moulds or any moulds you have.
Leave overnight, then pop out and store in jars.

Nourishing Body Oils
Create beautiful body oils by mixing:
50ml of avocado, sweet almond, or apricot kernel oil
(or the budget-friendly but equally effective sunflower, olive, or wheatgerm oils)
Add 50 drops of essential oil, either a single scent like lavender or a blend — lavender, geranium, and jasmine work beautifully together.
Pour into small bottles and label. A simple, thoughtful gift for anyone who loves natural self-care.
