Asthma inhaler

Did you know that asthma inhalers can be fatal to your dog? Several asthma inhalers such as Salbutamol inhalers, a common bronchodilator used to treat asthma in humans, can cause serious toxicity in dogs.

For some reason these inhalers, once used a few times, can smell like meat to dogs. This has the danger of your dog chewing it and potentially popping it open in their mouth.

If a dog punctures an inhaler and ingests the medication, it can lead to a rapid and dangerous absorption of the drug, potentially resulting in life-threatening symptoms.

Should this happen get your dog to the vet asap, the ingredients in this type of inhaler are HIGHLY toxic to dogs in a large amount. Their potassium levels plummet, putting them at risk of cardiac arrest.

If you have asthma, please be vigilant with your inhaler. If your dog does get it, don’t hesitate. Get to the vet or an emergency pet clinic immediately.

Common effects of inhaler toxicity in dogs include:

Rapid heart rate (tachycardia)

Drop in potassium levels (hypokalemia)

Tremors and agitation

Vomiting

Seizures

Risk of cardiac arrest

If you suspect your dog has chewed or ingested an inhaler, it’s important to seek emergency veterinary care immediately. The quicker treatment is provided, the better the chances of recovery.
