Finally, after much debate a sugar tax of 25p (53c) a litre has been placed on soda drinks in the UK. Here in New Zealand, we drink 85 million litres of soda a year, so a similar tax could make a big difference in that total. Nano Girl Michelle Dickenson has written this excellent piece in the Herald about the whole issue. I personally think that for some people paying an extra 53c won’t make a blind bit of difference, but for others, it may help them stop and think. When a litre of Coke is cheaper than a litre of milk in this country there is something very wrong about that equation. But I’m glad the UK has done it, and predictably is not being sued by the multi-billion dollar soft drink giants because we can see if it works for them, and then our government will have no excuse not to follow suit.
