This is a pattern I came across when looking for a good quality face mask that can be made at home out of 100% cotton. What I liked about this design is that there’s a pocket for a filter – you can use a coffee filter and then dispose of it after a few uses and put a new one in.

There’s also additional instructions for using fabric ties made from cotton, ready-made bias binding or t-shirt material instead of elastic ear loops. 

To make your mask you’ll need a sewing machine, 100% cotton with a tight weave, elastic or fabric for ear loops, fabric scissors, a ruler, pins or clips and thread.

“Test data shows that the best choices for DIY fabric masks are cotton t-shirts, pillowcases, or other cotton materials. Using a double layer of material for your DIY mask adds a small increase in filtration effectiveness.

Other research has found that most effective masks were constructed of two layers of heavyweight “quilters cotton” with a thread count of at least 180, and had a thicker and tighter weave.“
