As you know we are not fans of using commercial air fresheners in the home. They contain nasty chemicals which get sprayed all over your children, pets and food.
Whilst looking for other ways to freshen the air I came across this home deodoriser recipe on our blog that uses nothing but water, lemons and rosemary. It makes the whole house smell amazing – naturally.
You can also use an oil diffuser and harness the beautiful aromatherapy properties of essential oils, make old-fashioned potpourri, or leave little dishes around with cotton wool balls soaked in essential oils.
If you decide to opt for an essential oil air freshener there are plenty of good ideas for essential oil mixes in the book The Fragrant Pharmacy, by Valerie Ann Wormwood.
DIY Lemon & Rosemary Room Deodoriser
6 stalks rosemary*
2 lemons, sliced
In a large frying pan put the sliced lemons, rosemary stalks and water and bring to the boil.
Let simmer on the stove until your house smells delicious.
Do keep an eye on it so it doesn’t dry up and top up with boiling water from the kettle.
Once cool put into a spray bottle. Keeps for about a month.
*this would also work well if you replaced the rosemary with lavender.
